Guide to Playing Mid Evelynn

Evelynn isn't usually the first champion you think of when you think of mid lane, but if you think about it....why not? Ever since her latest buff in Patch 10.16, her Hate Spike [Q] is now half the cooldown without hitting monsters, effectively giving her massive wave clear potential coupled with the existing assassination kit that's given her plenty of success in the jungle.

Ever since her latest buff in Patch 10.16, her Hate Spike [Q] is now half the cooldown without hitting monsters, effectively giving her massive wave clear potential coupled with the existing assassination kit that's given her plenty of success in the jungle.

I had someone play it in my game and I just had to test it out!

How to Play
Abilities: Q, E, W then prioritize R > Q > E > W

Summoner Spells: Flash + Ignite

Starting Items: Doran Ring + Health Potions

Strategy: Clear waves and harass/roam as needed

Core Items: Luden's Echo, Sorcerer's Shoes, Rabaddon's Deathcap, Lichbane, Morellonomicon, Void Staff

Rune Setup

Primary: Electrocute, Sudden Impact, Eyeball Collection, Relentless Hunter
Secondary: Magical Footwear, Minion Dematerializer



How It Works

Low Mana Cost High Waveclear
The same waveclear that makes her jungle possible also makes her lane clear just as good ever since they haved Hate Spike [Q]'s cooldown without needing to hit monsters anymore. For those that never touch the jungle, this duration allows to pretty much Q continuously and at 40 mana can be used at will.

Excellent Roaming Potential
After Evelynn hits level six, her passive allows her to push and roam, creating huge map pressure just like Evelynn does as a jungler. However, with Evelynn and a jungler combined, they can provide twice as much pressure.

Massive Passive Sustain
If Evelynn gets low, her passive automatically heals her every second until she's back  up to fighting power. This means that she can sustain in lane indefinitely as long as the enemy laner doesn't have kill potential.

Potential Pitfalls

Difficult Crowd Control
In lane, hitting her Allure [W] is fairly difficult as they can see you at all times. This gives her relatively low kill potential even though she has good trade potential. Later in the game of course she doesn't have this issue, but you likely won't get as many lane kills as you would with other assassins.

Squishy Early All-In
At level one, Evelynn can out-trade nearly any other melee champion in the game. However, once level three rolls around she has lower burst power than other mid laners, reducing her lane pressure if the enemy laner has a similar amount of wave clear.

No Escapes
Other than a difficult to land charm, escaping as Evelynn is fairly difficult, especially if you can't shove the lane all the way to the enemy turret. If you end up getting the wave frozen at the enemy turret, this ends up creating significant issues, especially if the enemy jungler is hovering around mid.

Countering Mid Evelynn

Play a relatively tankier champion with good waveclear, such as Galio.

Conclusions

This pick is actually quite good after the change to her Hate Spike, and I could definitely see this becoming a popular selection. She may also be strong as a top laner, but being weak to all-ins it may be more difficult for her to survive.
