An Oldie Returns
It's always fascinating when a former Weird Picks return as a FOTM champion. Nocturne mid's evolved slightly since out May 2016 article, and I think it's a good time to refresh his capabilities after putting up our new Top Team Comp #108: Hidden Threat. Check out what makes Nocturne mid special below!

Rune Setup
How It Works
Incredible Waveclear/Sustain
Combining Nocturne's Duskbringer and passive, Nocturne's waveclear is incredibly good. Most enemy champions won't be able to do much to him early on, especially when you couple his passive sustain with Corrupting Potion.
Strong All-In
Nocturne's crowd conntrol and damage boost give him a powerful all-in that most champions are unable to deal with, especially if he uses his spellshield on their crowd-control spell. This works against both the mid-laner and the enemy jungler, who he'll be searching out to gank early game in the river.
Excellent Roaming Potential
Similar to Twisted Fate or Pantheon, Nocturne's post-6 gives him strong roam potential. His waveclear gives him priority against most mid-laners, and his gank is arguably stronger than Twisted Fate and Pantheon, albeit at shorter ranges.

Potential Pitfalls
Weak Against High Damage Champions
Generally speaking, Nocturne will have trouble against champions that can burst him down before his fear procs and can negate his spellshield with one of many attacks. A good example of this would be Katarina, who can take him down faster than he can react.
Low Poke Damage
Generally speaking Nocturne's poke damage is obviously going to be much lower than most spellcasters. As a result, if you end up in a poke war don't expect to come out on top. However, he does do well with poke champions on his team, since that gives him more margin of error before he all-ins enemy champions.
Roam Reliant
Nocturne mid is reliant on snowballing his team in order to stay relevant. He can't just passively farm his lane, or even his mid laner and expect to win the game outright. Instead, he needs to constantly patrol the map and apply pressure everywhere. However, if you can accomplish this then great things happen.

Conclusions
Nocturne mid is a fun champion that works particuarly well due to its simplicity. The difficulty lies in exerting map pressure constantly, but if you manage to do that and avoid taking unnecessary poke damage, he ends up a very strong mid laner.
