Top lane's a bit of a clown fiesta now with Riven and Kayle running amok with their absurd damage and survivability causing some serious issues. Meanwhile, Sylas is really coming into his own now, with players maximizing his low health turnaround plays and confounding enemies with his massive mobility.

Instructions and Caveats:

• This tier list details which champions are most popular in today's current metagame, for better or for worse. Selecting a high popularity champion and doing mediocre is always favorable to selecting a low tier champion and doing mediocre for team morale.

God Tier: These champions are common bans and are likely perceived as being "overall extremely strong/broken". They have very obvious and/or flashy skills that make them appear stronger than other champions. You'll likely see these champions picked early on if they're not banned.

Tier 1: These champions are the ones you'll see in the majority of your games and are good to familiarize yourself with as you'l be battling against them a lot.

Tier 2: These champions are relatively strong and have historically been picked more often than other champions. They may have been nerfed at one point at another, but are still perceived as strong in their current states.

Tier 3: These champions aren't quite as popular as the rest of the champions in the first 3 tiers, but picking them one at a time isn't going to cause much of a concern on your team. However, if you have a team of 5 of them your teammates are likely to feel a bit uneasy about your chances of winning in solo queue.

Tier 4: Selecting these champions will likely cause a rift between you and your teammates, who will proceed to flame you if you fail your lane. Exercise caution when selecting these champions, as team morale often plays a big part in victory or defeat.

Champion Explanations

• Ezreal [God Tier Marksman] - Despite the nerfs to his double Tear build this patch, Ezreal continues to be one of the highest played marksmen. We'll see if that changes as the patch goes on, but players are simply opting to build a Luden's Echo for the increased mana and magic burst damage for similar, if not greater effect.
• Irelia [Tier 1 Mid] - After falling off in pick rate for a few patches, Irelia is back in force as a mid-laner. She's not noticeably stronger by any means, but players die-hard Irelia mains still make her work. By understanding that she's no longer the all-in keyboard smashing champion she used to be, players can still take advantage of her powerful utility and mobility to scale into a late-game powerhouse.
• Jarvan IV [God Tier Jungle] - In a meta that featured Sivir for a while, Jarvan quickly gained popularity. Even as she fades out (see below), Jarvan continues to do well by working alongside Vayne to offer free condemns and powerful initiation.
• Kayle [God Tier Top] - After a rocky start, players quickly grew to love Kayle and her unfairly powerful late game. Even if you can't do much early, Kayle becomes a ticking time-bomb with powerspikes at level 11 and level 16 large enough to make Lucian's level 2 look like child's play.
• Neeko [Tier 1 Marksman] - As a marksman, Neeko really took off last patch. Despite the nerfs, players continue to use her and enjoy doing so. Whenever your team is low on magic damage, she's an obvious choice without picking up something like Brand or Swain. This allows your team to still have a traditional-looking marksman but dish massive magic damage.
• Riven [God Tier Top] - There's a lot of complaining going around about how Riven is crazy broken right now with Spear of Shojin. She's incredibly difficult to kill with Death's Dance as a squishy-looking bruiser, and dealing with someone who actually knows how to play her is downright impossible.
• Sivir [Tier 1 Bot Carry] - Without material changes to Sivir, it's still not surprising that she's slowly fading out of popularity. She's not a terribly satisfying champion to play, and doesn't snowball lane nearly as hard as the most popular picks in the game. She's straight-forward and easy, just not sexy enough for most players.
• Sylas [God Tier Mid] - Sylas quickly gained popularity after players learned how to play him. His mid-lane is extremely oppressive early game, and he can tangle with champions like Yasuo with ease. Meanwhile, despite his heal nerf, his low health comeback kills are still incredibly annoying or satisfying to deal with, depending on which side of the trade you're on.
• Vi [Tier 1 Jungle] - We've got plenty written up on Vi located here, but I just wanted to pop in a quick word. There are a lot of people that complain she's been power-creeped by newer junglers like Kayn, but to be honest she remains a very steady and incredibly satisfying pick. She might feel like an ult bot in some games, but with the latest buffs on her ult, she's a pretty solid ult bot.
