Have you ever stepped away from League for a few months or maybe even a few years? Even as the guy who runs Nerfplz I've found myself trying out other games for a few weeks or even months at a time while barely touching League. There's always something about coming back that's just so easy and enjoyable though. But what is it that gives League of Legends its amazing "stickiness" that keeps you coming back for more, even pulling you back from addicting games like World of Warcraft or Monster Hunter World? Check out our top 10 reasons below!
Introduction
Have you ever stepped away from League for a few months or maybe even a few years? Even as the guy who runs Nerfplz I've found myself trying out other games for a few weeks or even months at a time while barely touching League. There's always something about coming back that's just so easy and enjoyable though. But what is it that gives League of Legends its amazing "stickiness" that keeps you coming back for more, even pulling you back from addicting games like World of Warcraft or Monster Hunter World? Check out our top 10 reasons below!
Social Stickiness
Despite all the solo queue people play, it really just takes one person coming back and inviting you to an ARAM to remind you why you fell in love with the game in the first place. Some games fall by the wayside once nobody plays it. League on the other hand, sports a pre-game lobby that effectively doubles as a messaging app.
Champion Variety
When the game first came out, nobody believed that Riot could keep up its rapid pace of champion development. They said by the time a few years rolls around Riot's going to have over a hundred champions. There's no way that the game will be balanced...well, it might not be perfectly balanced, but it certainly isn't complete chaos either! Having so many champions keeps the game fresh and fun, even after playing for so many years.
No Endgame
Many games have a final mission or goal that people strive for, achieve, then lay down the game until they pick it up for nostalgia. League's end-game really has no end. Even if you want to be #1, staying at the top of the ladder is incredibly difficult as a result of all the guppies below trying to suck that position away.
Progressing Difficulty
Some people jump into their first game of League after playing other MOBAs for many years and say this game is too easy. The beauty of it all is that the game quickly scales up and matches you against better and better players until it becomes challenging.Easy to Blame Others
Gamers in League of Legends often blame others for losing, and while this might not seem like a positive attribute, it certainly contributes to how addictive League is. There's always some sort of outside influence to losing a game as a result of its 5v5 nature. Because of this, there's always next time when you don't have that one feeder on your team...
Everyone Wins Eventually
The magic of the MMR system is that eventually it evens you out to a point where you win and lose about 50% of the time. This means that even if you go on a massive 50 game losing spree (no doubt because of a streak of bad team mates), you can eventually start winning again once your MMR dips low enough, thus validating your position that it was all just a bad dream.
Competitive Drive
Some games are multi-player, but the competition between players isn't intense unless you meet up with a rival in-game. In League, each game fires up a player's competitive drive both against the enemy team and amongst your own team. This creates a strong feeling of desire to play the game and win.Old Champion Refreshes
Even the coolest of champions become stale as power creep sneaks up on old champions. Luckily, League's got this awesome habit of remaking old champions to keep us on our toes. Not all the reworks turn out well, but with over a hundred champions to choose from, even the most die-hard of one-trick ponies can't complain for long.Similar Mechanics on Champions
After a big shake-up in your main champion pool, players sometimes wonder if they can get back into the game. Luckily, almost all the mechanics on League are transferable to other champions. Even the majority of "complicated" champions really only have one unusual champion defining gimmick. Otherwise, the rest of their kit is made up of techniques that you've already mastered on other champions.
Yearly Game Shake-Up
Many players dread it, but many players also look forward to it as a way to level the platform and maybe find that "one weird trick" that will get them up to challenger. At the end of each year Riot releases some incredibly game-changing mechanic to the game that utterly redefines the way we play, whether it be sweeping jungle changes, the removal of our runes, or adding random plants to all around the map. Conclusions
Even if you're not a fan of some of the reasons why League is addictive, it's impossible to deny that they have a winning formula after almost a decade of existence. Despite all the competing games that were released since its inception, League of Legends continues to perform incredibly well around the world.Got more reasons why League is addictive?
