Weird Picks #81: No/Late Sightstone Soraka Support

Lovingly described as the greediest Soraka build I've ever seen, this strategy was first popularized by a 600 LP Challenger Soraka one trick known as "Seb" on the NA server for his previous gamer tag before he changed it to a few strange characters.

This build is heavily reliant on NOT dying during the laning phase to make use of the incredible scaling offered by the runes and build, but definitely draws some serious ire if your team happens to be losing. Make sure to read through the below before attempting!

How to Play
RunesAbility Power Quints, Scaling Ability Power RedsScaling Health Yellows, Scaling Ability Power Blues

Why It Works

Excellent Early Game Trades
If you can hit the enemy champion(s) and some of the minion wave with her Starcall [Q] at level one, you can almost guarantee the level two power spike coupled with out-sustaining the enemy laner, even without the use of pots. This makes her extremely safe against passive supports like Janna, and also effective against poke supports like Karma and Lulu.

Crucible Scaling
Mikael's Crucible is largely known as a pretty awful item. However, it is also the only item that offers 20% shield/heal scaling compared to the rest of the items weighing in at 10%. It also provides a bonus health regen equivalent to your mana regen, which is EXTREMELY effective on Soraka, but near useless on everyone else simply because she uses health as a resource for healing.

Passively Win Other Lanes
Even if your lane isn't winning too hard, once she hits level six, Soraka's ability to instantly change the outcome of other lanes via her Wish [R] is immense. When you couple this with the early level two ultimate at level 10 as a result of the Emperor's Favor from her gold item, she quickly becomes a major nuisance.

Massive Scaling
By giving up sightstone, Soraka gets an extra Forbidden Idol item earlier. This allows her to stay far ahead of the Executioner's Calling and Morellonomicon builders, even though she's a support and gets relatively little gold unless she picks up free assists across the map.

Potential Pitfalls

No Sightstone
Not carrying a sightstone tends to be massive handicap to your team if your team is already losing early turrets and the enemy team is controlling all the objectives. As a result, if you end up dying a few times in lane and your team loses all its outers, you need to take inventory of the situation.

If your team keeps dying alone in the jungle, picking up a sightstone may prevent the free gold from flowing to the enemy team. However, if your team is losing team fights straight up, picking up an extra Forbidden Idol item may be the only way for your team to win the team fights.

Squishy Target
The alternative Soraka build is the classic Redemption, Locket, Warmog's, Spirit Visage build, which makes Soraka exceedingly more difficult to kill, but also reduces her burst heals. With this build, Soraka quickly becomes a prime target for enemy assassins. As a result, it is important to save her silence and summoners and have a quick trigger finger on the Wish [R] key.

Lower Ward Clearing Power
Although most solo queue supports tend to carry Oracle Alteration, this build requires Farsight Alteration as a result of the extremely squishy nature of the build. As a result, make sure to communicate to your team that the jungler should be building an Oracle to make sure your team can still maintain objective control.

Weak Against Early All-Ins
This build's rune page is heavy into scaling. As a result, if your AD carry isn't in on the plan and allows an all-in duo lane to power spike to level two before you, the lane could quickly fall behind and end up feeding as a result of the weak level one setup.

Conclusions

This build is certainly viable enough on a winning team, and can quickly snowball your team to victory as every member becomes unkillable as a result of your massive heals. However, if your team is falling back and losing, it is very difficult to come back unless the enemy team starts turret diving as a result of the low map control this build provides without sightstone.

I would use caution when following this build, and only do it when your team is winning or even.

Suggested Rating: Tier 1
