There are a ton of champions roaming the fields of justice, but few really get a chance to shine other than in the hands of a few dedicated players. Most of the time, players flock to one champion or two per role, and the rest are largely ignored. However, this does not necessarily mean that the unplayed champions are bad, just under the radar.
What are some of the least loved but highly effective champions out there? Let's check out ten of them below!

Introduction
There are a ton of champions roaming the fields of justice, but few really get a chance to shine other than in the hands of a few dedicated players. Most of the time, players flock to one champion or two per role, and the rest are largely ignored. However, this does not necessarily mean that the unplayed champions are bad, just under the radar.
What are some of the least loved but highly effective champions out there? Let's check out ten of them below!
Galio [Mid]
Galio has some of the strongest waveclear in the game, and easily has time to poke out enemy champions as well via his 7 second Resolute Smite (Q). Combined with his ultimate, tower diving a Galio is nearly impossible unless you can knock him out his ulti once he starts channeling.
His shield also grants him a huge amount of defensive stats and an added heal bonus as well.
All-in-all, Galio is extremely powerful when:
- His nukes are strong enough to clear waves earlier than other champions.
- Your team has enough burst damage to take out enemies during his two second AOE taunt.
Certain AD based champions like Talon or Yasuo do counter Galio, but he still sports a decent win rate against both.
Zilean [Mid]
Zilean is one of those champions that benefitted indirectly from the mage updates a little more than the rest. Classically, Zilean is a champion that benefits immensely from cooldown reduction and mana regeneration, but had to sacrifice a good chunk of damage in order to gain access to both.
However, by building Rod of Ages + Morellonomicon, he has access to some of the most gold-efficient damage items in the game while still gaining plenty of his all-important mana regen and cooldown reduction.
He also works exceedingly well against the ever popular Zed, and can waveclear and deny Zed's level 6 burst to his heart's content.
Kayle [Top]
Kayle Top is obnoxiously strong. Right now, most players are focused on champions with flashy kits, but Kayle's early game cheese plays and late game hypercarry ability are both equally disturbing to watch.
Her skillset is one of the most straight-forward in the game, and it's overwhelming for most melee champions early game. She's somewhat similar to Draven with her auto-attack steroid and speed boost, but more accurate described as a Draven that shoots out Darius Decimates at maximum attack speed.
If that's not scary sounding I don't know what is.
Akali [Top]
Similar to Kayle, Akali is one of those champions that can potentially snowball into some extremely heavy cheese plays. However, she does have to play safe until level 6 before she can really out-trade via her double Q proc (Q, wait a bit, R -> Q-> auto/R).
The revamped Hextech Gunblade is also extremely good right now, and the new hextech revolver greatly amplifies her early game burst damage.
Skarner [Jungle]
Skarner jungle fell by the wayside after Cinderhulk nerfs LONG ago. However, the latest Trinity Force buffs definitely helped him a TON (similar to Hecarim). By shifting crit chance over to attack speed and cooldown, Skarner is now an extremely powerful when combined with a Trinity Force. However, he's played almost six times less than Hecarim...secret OP for sure!
Wukong [Jungle]
Wukong jungle has not been popular for quite some time. After the pink ward changed from being invisible to visible, players quickly picked him up for some time. However, nowadays he sees relatively little play, with players much more interested in champions like Lee Sin and Kha'Zix.
A few patches ago, changes to Youmuu's Ghostblade and Black Cleaver build paths escalated a lot of spellcaster based AD champions to the forefront, but Wukong was left behind since he is not picked up in professional leagues much. Good think dynamic queue is not the professional scene, just a clown fiesta. Get down to some monkey business for easy LP!
Twitch [ADC]
Right now Twitch is quickly gaining notoriety for his massive burst damage, but pales in comparison to Lucian and Ezreal in terms of champion pick rate. I think that's a bit of a mistake in dynamic queue, since players are often caught alone and unaware, easy pickings for an invisible rat.
Varus [ADC]
Varus is gaining popularity as a mid-laner lately, but still has a muted role as a marksman. Most Varus players build very differently as a marksman compared to when they play him as a mid-laner, but both builds deal similar amounts of damage overall through a game.
As one of arguably the only two self-initiating marksman in the game (the other being Ashe), Varus seems a bit underrated at the moment. Yes, his ulti range is much shorter and his poke is more skill-based, but his burst damage is considerably higher in short skirmishes.
Sion [Support]
Sion Support was featured as a Weird Pick on Nerfplz a few months ago, and started gaining popularity recently in Korea. Meanwhile, Twisted Treeline gurus have been using him as a support for quite some time now.
A champion with an extremely large amount of free stats at his disposal, Sion is a CC monster that works wonderfully as a support. His initiation is also extremely good against sieges, and he provides free armor reduction for his marksman.
All-in-all, he is definitely one of the most underrated supports on the rift right now,
Brand [Support]
Brand support is likely going to be very strong this patch, with everyone moving towards passive shielding/healing supports in Patch 6.13. As one of the few support champions with the ability to burst down enemy squishies by himself, he's definitely someone to watch out for that flies under the radar most of the time.
Zyra is definitely stronger as a mage support right now, but Brand is also very strong if Zyra ends up getting banned.
