North America Servers DDOSed - June 26, 2016

If you try to log onto the NA server right now on League of Legends, you will probably be greeted by the following error message below once you enter in your username and password. Unfortunately, this is not an issue caused by a firewall setting, so trying multiple times will just result in the same message.

8:45 PM EST - Reports are coming in that the OCE servers are now down as well

Introduction

If you try to log onto the NA server right now on League of Legends, you will probably be greeted by the following error message below once you enter in your username and password. Unfortunately, this is not an issue caused by a firewall setting, so trying multiple times will just result in the same message.

If you click on the status link, you probably saw that according to Riot, nothing was out of the ordinary, and possibly tried to log on a few more times to no avail like most of us did.

What's Really Going On?

Apparently, a group of hackers called PoodleCorp took down the North American servers, who have also been targeting several YouTube and Twitch accounts as well, including League players like Redmercy.

Their intentions are not clear, but appears to just be general annoyance.

DDoS Attack Definition

Some people were asking what DDoS [Distributed Denial-of-Service] means, so here's the quick Wikipedia explanation below:

Denial of Service -  A denial-of-service (DoS) attack is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users, such as to temporarily or indefinitely interrupt or suspend services of a host connected to the Internet

Distributed Denial-of-Service - Where the attack source is more than one, often thousands of, unique IP addresses. It is analogous to a group of people crowding the entry door or gate to a shop or business, and not letting legitimate parties enter into the shop or business, disrupting normal operations.
