How to Play
Runes: 3 Ability Power Quints, Magic Penetration Reds, Flat Armor Yellows, Flat Ability Power Blues
Masteries: 21-9-0, Standard AP Laner Masteries
Abilities: Q, E, Q, W then prioritize R > Q > W > E
Core Items: Rod of Ages, Lichbane, Deathcap, Luden's Echo, Void Staff

Why It Works
Extremely Strong AP Ratios on Rocket Grab & Static FieldAt a 100% AP ratio on Rocket Grab AND Static Field's active, Blitzcrank scales up very hard to become a powerful one-trick pony assassin. The base damage on both is also very strong, and at max level deals 800 damage for both, not including any Static Field passive procs or AP built.
For comparison, Syndra at max level deals a minimum of 540 damage on her ultimate and 230 on her Dark Sphere for a total of 770 damage with 60% AP ratios (yes I'm aware she has other spells and her ult can be stronger. Blitz's ultimate is also AOE for that much damage ;) ).
Powerful Gank Assistance and Roam Potential
As anyone who's been pulled by Blitzcrank will attest to, getting pulled into a 1v2 battle is not something you generally want to do if your plan is not dying. Meanwhile, most people are also well aware of the roaming potential Blitzcrank has from bot lane to mid lane. How about from mid lane to everywhere on the map?
Overconfident Enemy Teams
There are few teams that would ever take a Blitzcrank mid seriously, often resulting in careless mistakes. Additionally, people often tell their junglers to "camp" Blitzcrank since he has relatively few escapes. However, a quick flash pull into turret at level 2 can make quick work of pretty much any jungler...
As anyone who's been pulled by Blitzcrank will attest to, getting pulled into a 1v2 battle is not something you generally want to do if your plan is not dying. Meanwhile, most people are also well aware of the roaming potential Blitzcrank has from bot lane to mid lane. How about from mid lane to everywhere on the map?

Potential Pitfalls
No Waveclear
If Blitzcrank gets zoned out early on, he'll find himself extremely low on farm. As a melee champion with a limited mana pool and basically no waveclear, he has a lot of trouble in lane if he falls behind. However, his base attack damage is fairly high, and he can CS just fine at turret if the enemy laner pushes it hard enough.
No Poke
One of the most valuable things mid laners can provide is some sort of long range poke to weaken enemy champions before the teamfight. However, as an exclusively all-in type of champion, Blitzcrank cannot fill this role.
Low Sustained Damage Pre-6
1v1, Blitzcrank really needs to land his pull if he intends to have any hope out-trading pre 6. Although his damage after he gets his ultimate is insanely strong via the passive proc, his only other move with an AP ratio is his Rocket Grab. This means that if an enemy champion is planning to all-in, simply flashing the Rocket Grab will negate almost the entirety of Blitzcrank's damage early on.

Conclusions
Blitzcrank is an extremely high risk champion with awesomely high damage and ratios. If he snowballs, you'll definitely see him one-shotting squishy champions instantaneously with his pull. However, once they realize how dangerous this is, it will likely be much more difficult to pull off unless they say "lucker dog" and run straight at you again.
