Ever since the introduction of runeglaive, AP Ezreal w/smite became the new favored child of mid lane players everywhere. Although the true effectiveness of the build is still debatable, it's a refreshing change for players looking to try something new.
Meanwhile, a little further under the radar is a champion with many similar mechanics to AP Ezreal: AP Gangplank! Check out the details below:
Note: As of Patch 5.13, Runeglaive enchant no longer procs Luden's Echo
Introduction
Ever since the introduction of runeglaive, AP Ezreal w/smite became the new favored child of mid lane players everywhere. Although the true effectiveness of the build is still debatable, it's a refreshing change for players looking to try something new.Meanwhile, a little further under the radar is a champion with many similar mechanics to AP Ezreal: AP Gangplank! Check out the details below:
How to Play
Runes: Ability Power Quints, Magic Penetration Reds, Armor Yellows, Magic Resist Blues
Masteries: 21-0-9, standard AP laner masteries
Abilities: Q, W, W, E then prioritize R > Q > W > E
Core items: Flask + Pots, Skirmisher's Sabre + Runeglaive Enchantment, Ionian Boots, Statikk Shiv, Luden's Echo, Infinity Edge, Void Staff, Deathcap
Masteries: 21-0-9, standard AP laner masteries
Abilities: Q, W, W, E then prioritize R > Q > W > E
Core items: Flask + Pots, Skirmisher's Sabre + Runeglaive Enchantment, Ionian Boots, Statikk Shiv, Luden's Echo, Infinity Edge, Void Staff, Deathcap
Note On Item Build
As you can tell, this core build is actually very expensive. The reason that many people go Statikk Shiv and Infinity Edge is for the critical chance, but it also turns him into a somewhat hybrid type of build.
Why AP Gangplank?
Critical Qs As MagicSimilar to Ezreal, Gangplank's Q is treated as magic damage after the purchase of Runeglaive. This means that not only does it scale via magic damage, it also CRITS as a magic damage spell.
Maximum Elemental Damage
The change to magic damage also allows him to proc Luden's Echo simultaneously with Statikk Shiv, giving him nearly instantaneous waveclear ability and powerful poke as well.
Scaling Ultimate
One of the most annoying parts about Gangplank is that his ultimate only scales off ability power, meaning that it's generally used for the CC. However, AP Gangplank gets to make full use of the damage component as well as it scales through the game.
Powerful In-Lane Sustain
By playing him as an AP champion, Gangplank also receives the full benefit of the impress 100% AP ratio attached to the heal on his scurvy.
Thoughts on AP Gangplank
As a melee champion, Gangplank does seem to lend himself more towards a tanky hybrid build, especially with his somewhat low dueling range. However, critplank and AP Gangplank have always had a little spot in my heart simply for the satisfaction of one shotting someone via a targeted spell and seeing huge numbers pop up.
Suggested Rating: High Tier 3
let's test :D
ReplyDeleteYou don't play AP Gankplank for poke is the problem. You play it for the sustain leading to more of an ap focused build. The idea is being able to apply pressure to other lanes and still be useful during a fight by ulting.
ReplyDeleteThe way you have it here is play like an AD/Crit Gangplank except do more damage with ult/have more heals.
I would think that without crit chance you'd still end up some sort of ult-bot late game though, even with the Runeglaive proc?
ReplyDeleteI've found that rushing a tear is good on ap gp. This leads to a brutal slow start but allows for easier spamming of the q during the mid game. GP can have mana probs and tear eliminates that and has good synergy with the runeglaive and frozen heart
ReplyDeleteOne thing I've found fun is going full critplank w/ smite but do warrior for starters. If you get rolling and people start building armor, sell warrior for runglaive and poof... you're all magic damage. Yes you don't have the same sustain as full AP GP, but you keep the raw damage of AD that AP can lack.
ReplyDeleteI just did this and wow its insane
ReplyDeleteSucks how they are making it so that runeglaive doesn't proc ludens any more next patch.... rip AP GP.
ReplyDeleteTry Runeglaive, Ludens, Liandrys, Rylais, Shiv, and Rabbadons. No need for boots, but the only thing this build lacks is CDR. Ults hit hard, and Q can take down tanks/dragons real quick because of the melt of liandrys.
ReplyDeletePlease no...
ReplyDeleteDude u dhould try this, if u have a little experience with gp its simply pure destruction.
ReplyDeleteSounds cool xD
ReplyDeleteTwisted Fate with Runeglaive may be funny as well
Sounds good.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunate that Runeglaive Ezreal/Gangplank are dead with 5.13; Runeglaive will no longer count as a spell for application of other spell effects, like Luden's Echo or Rylai's Crystal Scepter.
Here's a post by Riot on the subject: https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/3bwv14/runeglaive_no_longer_procs_ludens_on_pbe/csqfc0f
Granted, the enchantment is going to still be okay on Ezreal/Gangplank, but it won't be nearly as powerful as it is currently. There's also basically a 100% chance of this occurring since Riot had intended it differently to begin with; they're looking at this change to Runeglaive as a bug fix from a technical standpoint.
It's kind of disappointing in some ways, because Runeglaive was creating some interesting diversity through these interactions. Alas, it is fairly broken when being used this way, and creates a few problems as well. It would be cool to see Runeglaive as an option on mid-laners in the same way that Smite can be run on some top-laners (though frankly I've never been a huge fan of Smite/Teleport; nerfs to Skirmisher's Cinderhulk also reduced its strength to a fairly "balanced" level that will also lead to the item being crowded out a bit by meta shifts over time).

Until 5.13, though, definitely worth messing around with these builds just for fun.
So what about Ravenous Hydra? I tried it in a game a bit ago and it seems that runeglaive will still proc it. The build I'm currently playing about with is Stalkers Blade with Runeglaive, Statikk Shiv, Luden's Echo, Ravenous Hydra, Infinity Edge and Ionian Boots of Lucidity.
ReplyDeleteSo far it's been pretty silly, especially when the enemy team builds armor.
I can see Rito face-palming at the smite-in-lane builds they've created with Runeglaive
ReplyDeletenot bad for gp
ReplyDeletethey are already changing it as Mr. Cage has said a couple comments down
ReplyDeleteJust played gangplank. CritPlank. Very good. didnt build smite item tho. Critplank and some AP. He is great with some AP!!! Zhonyas HourGlass and it's early game armor/ap item is the shet yoh.... yo. AP boosts your heal a lot, and some bonus dmg to your ultimate, too! :) and Armour ofc defensive.
ReplyDeleteAnd zhonyas active..... good for gp. After zhonyas use Q/heal/burst enemy or so, if possible.
I didn't get fed but I didnt feed either. Neutral lane against a RIVEN. Farming nicely and avoiding her engages like a boss, harrass fights many times ended up in my favour :). Statikk Shiv, Zhonya's Hourglass. Ravenous Hydra. Last Whispa. and so on
I actually think that skirmishers blade could be better, since GP's Q applies on-hit effects, meaning it will deal true damage as well using the smite on the enemy champion
ReplyDeleteIm warning you guys right now, dont pick this in solo Queue. Theres a 95% chance your team will rage you and end up feeding then blaming you and reporting you. It just happened to me.
ReplyDeletethis build makes gangplank fun and viable i love it
ReplyDeleteIll just try to make the most of gangplank before they rework his kit D:
ReplyDeleteVery interesting by the way
a challenger player in na plays ap gangplank support often
ReplyDeleteYup. close minded people. Dont pick GP in ranked usually
ReplyDeleteAlthough I agree with you, I think there are points to be made as well about it.
ReplyDeleteRito spoke about changing runeglaive interacts with on-hit spells, which effects both gp and ez q's so that they no longer proc spell effects. This in turn takes away the utility of procing ludens or ryalais. So while that aspect changes, I think the more alluring part of so ez with runeglaive is his insane ap damage. I've completed his build before without ludens or ryalais and ended up doing twice the damage of everyone else in the game.
As far as gp would be concerned... I think that he would be much in the same boat in terms of ez with regards to runeglaive... I don't think it will be totally gutted, but I think that the builds will just be changed. Besides... Ap gp means there are no safe all in teamfights if his ult is up!
TL;DR: I think that it won't be dead, but that the builds will change as well as some of the utility. Adding the damage of more ad% and ap % I feel will open up the realms of a more hybrid build. Anyways, gg!

ReplyDeleteNo es importante, ni el fin del mundo... Arriba CHICHOS SOMOS 2DO !!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe whole Idea is that Runeglavine turns Q into UP damage
ReplyDeleteyes I know that idea with this build there but i have different AP'y critplank build
ReplyDeleteJust played this, But Runglaive did not proc Luden's echo
