Introduction
Hi everyone and welcome back to episode of Weird Pick Wednesday! This week we're takig a look at a former common pick upon his introduction, top lane Nautilus! With his extremely spammable, low mana skills, he's very simple to play and fairly rewarding as well. Check out the full details below!
How to Play
Runes: Ability Power Quints, Magic Penetration Reds, Armor Yellows, Magic Resist Blues
Masteries: 21-9-0, standard AP laner masteries
Abilities: E, W, E, Q then prioritize R > E > W > Q
Core items: Rod of Ages, Iceborn Gauntlet, Sunfire Cape, Deathcap, Void Staff, Triforce

Abilities: E, W, E, Q then prioritize R > E > W > Q
Core items: Rod of Ages, Iceborn Gauntlet, Sunfire Cape, Deathcap, Void Staff, Triforce
Why It Works
Low Mana Cost E SpamStarting at 40 mana, Nautilus is capable of spamming his E out in rapid succession. With its 7 second cooldown and decent AP ratios, he can quickily whittle down even high sustain champions. This also gives him strong waveclear for turtling at tower if need be.
Insane Melee Trading Power
Against the vast majority of melee champions top lane, Nautilus trades extremely well. With his triple explosion from melee range on his E combined with his enhanced melee with shield on his W, he can easily out-trade the majority of champions early game.
Good Late Game Initiation
Although most Nautilus top players tend to focus on damage rather than classical tanky roles simply because it's more fun that way, his late game tankiness is still extremely high and can initiate with high effectiveness via his anchor and ultimate.

Potential Pitfalls
Against certain ranged champions, Nautilus top might suffer if he can't nail his hook or Es often enough (read: Ryze). He may also have trouble against champions with strong early game all-ins such as Riven and Darius.
Building him AP also makes him slightly squishier, but he can easily transition over to a more tanky front line if that's what his team requires.

Conclusions
Top lane Nautilus is an extremely powerful laning champion against most melee, but does tend to have trouble against ranged or all-in type champions. He has strong presence late game via his CC, but may still need to build some tank items to stay relevant as the game goes on.
Suggested Rating: Low-Mid Tier 2

As someone who has been forced into maining naut I have played him in 4 roles. A lot of people underestimate your trades in lane because "lol report naut?". It can lead to easy kills. Also when behind you are still almost undivable. My laning building is as follows: RoA>boots (tab or treads)>liandry's if winning/randuins or banshee if losing>randuins/banshee>remainder of randuins/banshee or liandry's if I have both>wits end
ReplyDeleteThis is not a weird pick this is an awsome pick my nautilus top will destroy all lol jk
ReplyDeleteI like that build, but I pref full tank after rod. Most of the time I get teams where I am the only tank. QQ
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't feel too off meta, granted I haven't played him but he does seem to fit the bill for what a lot of teams want from a durable top laner with lots of cc

ReplyDeletei made a lolking guide with this build a bit ago please check it out <3 the build originated in Korea by Jin Air Trace
I would say more like Mao personally.
ReplyDeleteYeah... that happens. No one likes to play tanks
ReplyDeleteIMO naut top is very strong the e base dmg along with a little ap chunks people very fast, my build is roa then straight tank and maybe an iceborn the only think i would say about this post that isnt necessarily right is that he is weak against riven imo thats a very easy matchup whenever she goes aggresive just pop shield amd q her to stop the third q from landing then proceed to hit her with passive and e to take her to half hp
ReplyDeleteAGREED! He is SURPRISINLY STRONG. Naughtylus top
ReplyDeleteGuys check it out; naughty+nautilus. NAUGHTYlus :DDDD he is so naughty.
I prefer a bit tankier build with Liandry's and a Zz'Rot Portal (this item seriously underrated). Especially since his E and passive makes it easy to apply the doubled effect of Liandry's passive and his W has an DoT which is always good with Liandrys. Naut's shield makes it pretty difficult to trade with him unless your have crazy all-in damage like Darius/Riven. He is vulnerable when his W and Q are on cooldown, especially if the jungler shows up, but it's not a big drawback as long as you're smart about using your spells. (and assuming your Q isn't blocked by a minion lol)
ReplyDeleteUmmm.... I actually main tanks.
ReplyDeleteBut the general populace does not
ReplyDeleteOnce again I would like to remind everyone about the viability of Karma Jungle especially after next patches ap jungle buffs
ReplyDeleteBraum ADC
ReplyDeleteFun, sure, but what about magic resist?
ReplyDeleterenekton jungle
ReplyDeleteTIER 2 omg even a weird nauti pick is having a good time.
ReplyDeletePS. Never tried AP top, but full tank top is just as good as jungler nauti.
Karma Jungle next please! :D
ReplyDeleterenekton jungle?
ReplyDeleteTrue
ReplyDeleteI tested him and can attest that...it's FAT! For me, there is usually 2 build paths :
ReplyDelete- The traditionnal way used by pros and explained on nerfplz, in wich you could add a Abyssal after ROA (but only if you face strong AP and if your team has a lot of magic dealers) :
ROA->Mobility/Mercury->Abyssal->FH->Randuin->Banshee (E->W->Q)
Runes = AP Quint, M-pen red
- The AS-on-hit build, for when you want to go hand-2-hand with your shield-buff rather than just spamming E :
ROA->Mobility/Mercury->Gauntlet->Wits->Randuin->Banshee (W->E->Q)
Runes = AP Quint, AS red
These one if even more fun and deal possibly more dmgs for prolonged fights when your grab and R are on cd. But you will have less wave clear and less "in your face" engages. GL and hf ;)
in the last couple of day been playing nautilus top a bit (5 games, 2 norms, 3 ranked) and so far i'm 5/0 rushing trinity force- followed by situational items(hydra if ahead/frozen mallet for utiliy/tank if behind/team needs a tank) I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS BUILD ;p too bad nautilus Is getting nerfed in 5.13
ReplyDeletei've a 100% win rate in ranked (7 match on 7) °^°
ReplyDeleteQuint AP, 9x seal armor, 9x MR glyph flat , 9x AS Mark
Start:Flask
Mercury Treads, RoA,Frozen Heart , Abyssal Scepter/Nashor Tooth ,"various tanky items".
And is strange cuz i've faced ryze 2 times, and i dont think that him is a "counter".
I had more trouble against Pantheon/Tryndamere/Rengar.
