Champion Mastery live!
We’ve just pushed Champion Mastery out onto the live servers - complete any normal, teambuilder, or ranked game to start earning those sweet, sweet champion points! Here’s a quick reminder of the changes we’ve made to the system since we debuted it on PBE:
Player tooltips - Player tooltips now indicate the sum of your champion mastery levels across all champions
Participating queues - Queues now have an icon that indicates whether or not they grant champion mastery points
Ceremony - Added sound effects to end-of-game champion mastery animations
Role ranks - Champions now gain new titles based on their primary roles as you gain mastery levels (Once he hits Champion Mastery level 3, Ziggs gains the title of "Invoker" based on his primary role as Mage, for example). These titles are displayed on-hover in your Profile and Champions tabs, as well as the end-of-game Champion Mastery results display.
HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS
Finish a game of League and you’ll earn points for your champion based on your team’s performance as well as your own contribution. Earn enough points and you’ll level up that champ’s mastery level, giving you rewards as you progress.
REWARDS
Crests
We’re kicking off Champion Mastery with the first five ranks for each champion unlocked. Here are the crests your champion will earn as they rank up:
Titles
At each rank there is also a role-specific title which you’ll be able to see on your profile. Below are the titles you get at each rank for a given role.
ROLLOUT
We’re kicking off the rollout of Champion Mastery across all servers in a few days, on Summoner’s Rift normal, teambuilder, and ranked queues. We’ll continue to read through your feedback and keep you updated with our progress, so keep an eye out for future posts after the service goes live!
Eligibility
All summoners who’ve hit level five or higher will be eligible for Mastery points on SR normal, teambulilder, and ranked queues.
The Future
This is just the beginning for Champion Mastery. As the system matures, we’ll unlock extra tiers and rewards as we build on the program!
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will I get XP credit for how much I've already played a champion?A: We’re not currently planning to do this. Because this is a new system, we want players to feel progress (and earn rewards!) based on how well they do and the champions they choose to play.
Q: What goes into the grading system? How do you calculate it?
A: It’s based on the champion and role that you just played in a game. So, for example, we look at Annie mid differently to Annie support. We take a series of performance metrics and compare how you do to all other players in your region in your champion / position combination. It is percentile driven - so earning a high score means you performed in the top x% of players on that champ in that position. The grade itself governs the point gains.
Q: How many games will it take to level up?
A: We expect players to take 15-30 games to level through the first set of levels (1 through 5). We’ll be unlocking additional levels later.

Q: Is this going to feel grind-y?
A: This system is performance based - the quicker you master a new champion, the quicker you’ll make progress.

At the same time, we want it to be accessible enough that all players can feel good about improving.
We’re tuning this system so that you will be leveling up the set of champions that you really enjoy playing and getting meaningful feedback on your performance each game. The ceilings are intentionally set low for each individual champion to avoid making it feel like a grind.

Q: What other kinds of rewards are planned for the future?
A: We are going to see how people enjoy using the system and what they like about it before we finalize our future plans. We’d love feedback on this.

Q: Will skins ever be a reward?
A: It’s not something we’re considering right now, but we are exploring other ideas for unique rewards we think you guys might like.

What is your opinion?
ReplyDeleteAwesome.
ReplyDeleteisnt this just another way people can search up people's stats on lol nexus for ranked? -__-
ReplyDeletebut its pretty kewl still
ReplyDeleteAnd then I'll be the one Guardian Bard in NA.
ReplyDeleteI think it's awesome!
ReplyDelete"They will not available to 3rd party sites either."
ReplyDeleteI think you should only get points for this in ranked or when you're level 30 because you haven't really mastered any champs before you hit 30 and i don't think anyone can call themselves a tier 5 master yi slayer assassin when they're only level 15
ReplyDeletei tried ap nasus but i got brawler ;[
ReplyDeleteOMG this is so good ive beeen waiting for this sooo long!M!!
ReplyDeleteThe fact that there no decay/demotion means that being a tier 5 master yi slayer assassin doesn't mean you are good but that you simply played a lot of games. Fun little system but has no actual meaning
ReplyDeleteIt is based of off whatever Riot lists as there main role.
ReplyDeleteThey will be adding more tiers.
ReplyDeleteThat said this system is closer to a champion experience system.
You can reach Tier 5 in ~15 games if you win every game and play at S grade every game. (From my experience on the PBE)
But if you lose games or play poorly it can easily take 30+ games just to get to Tier 5. (B grade losses grant around half the CP as an S grade win)
Grades will not be visible.
ReplyDeleteChampion Mastery level will be visible to all and therefore may, eventually, be on 3rd party sites.
You are right but the point is that I could play sona jungle for 40 games of buffet style feeding and be a T5 sona. If people are using these to judge skill they are doing it wrong. That's all I'm saying.
ReplyDeleteWhich is why I ignore the "mastery" part and put "experience" in its place.
ReplyDeleteAlso, most of us aren't going to go play 40 games of feeding JUST to get tier 5, when 20 games could reasonably get you there and in half the time.
What Is the New Champion Mastery System?
ReplyDeleteA bad copy of Heroes of the Storm one xD
My original comment was to someone who seemed to think t5=great at that champ. I think you and I are on the same page and I'm not exactly sure why you are looking for rings to disagree with. The sona comment was exaggerated and not to be taken as a real scenario my apologies if I caused confusion
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you lost every game and fed/did poorly it could actually take over 100 games.
ReplyDeleteIt take 21000 CP to hit tier 5 and poor performance losses give 200 or less, while an S rank win was giving ~1500 on average.
I think I am just frustrated with the argument that the system is worthless.
ReplyDeleteSorry if I came off as too aggressive :\.
Overall, from what BR and PBE have shown, this system actually encourages people to be less toxic.
you mean I can't play marksman Zyra?!? D:
ReplyDeletelvl 15 noobs is where Yi is teh b3st tho lol. Q spam pentakills all day
ReplyDeleteWell, you can. But she will still have the Mage title. (She is listed as a mage first, right?)
ReplyDeleteHowever, when they grade you, they only compare you to the other Zyra ADCs.
Yeah, like I think it is a fun little system. Right now I'm a little indifferent to it but I am definitely looking forward to them going more in depth.
ReplyDeleteSo here is what i think.I played a few games when they released the system earlier today and from what i saw its making players actually playing better. What im trying to say is that system is an actualy way to make ppl think they are improving even when they are not so they can actually start to.Its basicly a placebo efect but its a damn good one i have to say.Id love to see how this system will be improved.
ReplyDeleteI got S+ on Darius... pure skill <3
ReplyDeleteOHHH Awesomee =)!!!
ReplyDeleteIf anyone cares it took exactly 15 games (in only three of them did I play poorly), 13W 2L, to reach rank 5 on Ziggs.
ReplyDeleteMaintained a KDA average of : 11.9/4.7/8.7
You're half right. It doesn't mean anything directly about actual skill. But think about when you play CoD and get killed by some sniper with the fall camo on his gun. There's usually some correlation between the reward and the skill level purely because of how much practice and time it takes to get to that level.
ReplyDeleteI mean if you do get champion mastery after playing 40 some games as jungle Sona, then I will bet by then you're the best damn jungle Sona in NA server, right?
well nobody really cares, but nice job on the rank and well done on the KDA.
ReplyDeleteAt least you are honest ;_;.
ReplyDeleteWhat is S rank?
ReplyDeleteS A B C D is the scale they are using. It includes +/- versions as well.
ReplyDeleteI would assume a B is average e.g. you played as well as ~50% of the population on that champion in that roll.
They are using a percentile based scale for the grades.
So, S grades would be the top 20% I would think.
S+ being in the top ~6%, S would be ~7% - ~13% and S- in the ~14% to 20% range.
Hopefully that helps a bit.
I vote that we keep the ranks system going I'm reallyy enjoying it on my main Twisted Fate I know TF is a hard player to play but I'm getting used to it making my grade go higher the grade and the mastery of champions is awesome you should keep it...Katrina needs to (BE NERFED)
ReplyDeletehow can i showup those badge in game?
ReplyDeleteCTRL+6 is the default I believe.
ReplyDeleteIf you have rank 4 or 5 it will show, otherwise there will be a message telling you that you have not unlocked it yet.
Ey does anyone know how to display your mastery in game?
ReplyDeleteI like the champion rank system. It should go past 5 though. Also, you should have different titles based on performance and actual in game champion usage. Also, the ability to earn multiple titles on a champ. That would make the system exactly what it was designed to be. I reached level 5 in one day with Varus. There should be more progression with more variability than that.
ReplyDeletewhich was a mistake, but hopefully they'll change that.
ReplyDeleteIt is really pointless to care about a name that only you will see...
ReplyDeleteThe only way it would matter is if they introduced multiple champion masteries for each champion that included all roles.
Seems pretty unlikely to me.
They should reward LP/IP based on the grade as well. Like if you do well in game ward plenty dont feed, good cs, good kda you wont lose as much LP. This will also hinder potential trolls that want to do whatever in ranked
ReplyDeleteS+ has been confirmed to be around the top 2%.
ReplyDeleteAll of my previous post is off in all sorts of ways.
Which Champion Has Which Role? I Mean... Sona Will Get : Aide, Protector, Keeper, Blablabla....Is There A List Where I Can See Which Champ Has Which Role? Can I Influence In Which Role My Champ Goes Or Not?
