Introduction
Hi everyone and welcome back to episode of Weird Pick Wednesday! This week we're going to take a look at a former favorite that's fallen out of favor: the gunslinger known as Lucian. Getting hit with nerf after nerf, he's starting to drop out of the limelight as an AD carry.
However, is it time to bring him back in another role? Maybe it's time for the return of AP Lucian!

How to Play
Runes: Ability Power Quints, Hybrid Penetration Reds, Armor Yellows, Magic Resist Blues
Masteries: 21-9-0, standard AP laner masteries
Abilities: W, E, W, Q then prioritize R > W > E > Q
Core items: Luden's Echo, Lichbane, Deathcap, Voidstaff, Zhonya's Hourglass

Core items: Luden's Echo, Lichbane, Deathcap, Voidstaff, Zhonya's Hourglass
Why It Works
Long Range PokeSitting at a cool 1000 range, Lucian's Ardent Blaze has as much range as Graves' ultimate. Although it starts off at a relatively high cooldown at 14 seconds, it quickly scales down, especially if you can pick up blue buff. It also sports a very generous 90% AP ratio.
Meanwhile, at 1400 range, Lucian's ultimate also scales with AP, and gives him extremely strong burst damage during teamfights when he needs it.
Lichbane Synergy
Making use of his auto attack resets and passive, Lucian can make extremely good use of Lichbane. He also receives a massive powerspike as soon as he picks up Sheen, and can maximize the short 1.5 second cooldown between procs.
Safe Laning Phase
With the mobility provided to him via his E and W, he makes for a very agile laner that can use his escape to dodge skillshots and still remain safe from potential jungle ganks during laning phase.

Potential Pitfalls
Playing AP Lucian does somewhat gimp him until he picks up Lichbane, as his Q is essentially going to be useless except as an auto attack enhancer.
Note that Lucian in general does poorly against champions with strong gap closers such as Zed, and as an AP champion, won't be able to abuse his range as hard early game.
Conclusions
AP Lucian mid is definitely playable, and can possibly even do well depending on the overall skill level of your opponents. He does lack a full kit to be truly strong as an AP mage, but on a dull day is definitely fun to pull out. At the moment, AP Corki is definitely still much more viable if you're looking for something similar.
Suggested Rating: Low Tier 3

It says "What do you think about Urgot jungle?" I assume you meant AP Lucian mid right?
ReplyDeleteFixed, as for the masteries, they're both fairly negligible, but the percentage gives you a bit of a stronger boost, especially if your teammates build aegis.
ReplyDeleteWell I played AP lucian at urf and it was AMAZING!!! Spamming his W did a lot unexpected damage, I would say it may work in a normal game, but it wont be as successful
ReplyDeletedats urf tho
ReplyDeleteI love playing champions in different/weird roles or builds and AP lucian is awesome! I've done it in urf and regular and it works well in both. The only issue is you need to poke down the enemy team before fighting since W is your primary source of damage and it has a longish cooldown while you are waiting for it to come up again.
ReplyDeleteive been doing this for so long, my secret has been reviled
ReplyDeleteKarma buffs in 5.10 made jungle karma viable again!!! Please share the good news!!
